A semiauto, single/double action, Short-Recoil operated pistol, its been the sidearm of the US Military for more than 30 years. Its essentially a military specification Beretta 92FS. In 2006 the M9 was updated by beretta adding a picatinny rail, more agressive backstrap checkering and a beveled magazine well. In addition the magazines were coated with physical vapor deposition to provide sand resistance in the sandy environments in Iraq and Afghanistan This new version was adopted by the US Marines and called the M9A1.
